Recognize the problem

Signs your VW ignition switch is failing

The electrical switch is a small block behind the key cylinder. As its internal contacts wear, it can create intermittent faults that are easy to mistake for several unrelated problems.

  • You have to lift, hold, or jiggle the key before the engine starts.
  • Turn signals, cruise control, or windshield washers stop working while the high beams still work.
  • Wipers, radio, blower, air conditioning, or headlights operate intermittently.
  • The car occasionally will not start, or it dies and then restarts.
  • Heat damage or burning appears at the connector pigtail behind the switch.

Two different issues

Recall vs. repair: which one applies to you?

Check your VIN before paying for a repair

NHTSA recall 23V-604, Volkswagen code 28H7, concerns a polyfuse in certain physical ignition switches that can fail in high-temperature conditions and cause an engine stall or electrical-system failure.

The official recall population includes certain 2019–2020 Jetta and 2019–2020 Golf GTI vehicles, plus certain 2019 Golf, Golf SportWagen, and Golf Alltrack vehicles. It is VIN-specific. Volkswagen dealers replace an eligible recalled switch free of charge.

The common electrical switch failures we repair on approximately 2008–2016 Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Beetle, Golf, and GTI vehicles are not covered by recall 23V-604. If your VIN does not qualify, Chicago Car Keys can diagnose the turn-key switch and explain your repair options.

Focused diagnosis

Why Chicago Car Keys

Replacing the electrical ignition switch does not replace the key cylinder or change the vehicle’s security system. It does not require key or immobilizer reprogramming, so this repair does not have to be performed by a dealer.

Volkswagen ignition-switch repair FAQ

My VW will not start or its electrical accessories work intermittently. Could the ignition switch be the problem?

It may be. Electrical ignition-switch failures can cause intermittent starting or accessory problems on some 2008–2016 Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Beetle, and Golf models. We diagnose the vehicle before recommending repair because similar symptoms can have other causes.

Is this covered by a Volkswagen recall?

Recall 23V-604 / 28H7 covers certain 2019–2020 Jetta and Golf GTI vehicles and certain 2019 Golf, Golf SportWagen, and Golf Alltrack vehicles equipped with a physical ignition switch. Coverage is VIN-specific, so check the NHTSA recall lookup and Volkswagen recall lookup before arranging paid repair.

Can you fix it at my location?

Yes. Chicago Car Keys provides mobile Volkswagen ignition-switch diagnosis and repair at homes, workplaces, and other accessible locations in Chicago, Cook County, and DuPage County.

Will I need a new key too?

Not usually. Replacing the electrical ignition switch behind the key cylinder does not normally replace or alter the immobilizer components. If the key, transponder, or mechanical lock is also involved, we will explain the additional service needed.

How long does the repair take?

Repair time depends on the Volkswagen model, diagnosis, parts needed, and the condition of the switch connector. After inspecting the vehicle, we will explain the expected completion time before work begins.

Is mobile ignition-switch repair less expensive than going to a dealership?

Mobile service can eliminate the need to tow the vehicle to a dealership. Final cost depends on the diagnosis, model, required parts, and whether the connector is damaged. Call (773) 521-7000 for an assessment and quote.
